Solve Graphics Problems with Ubuntu 8.04 (Dell Latitude E6510 / Dell Inspiron 510m)

Kernel updates

After a kernel update I experienced cases where I had to reinstall the Nvidia graphics driver :-( -> see #Updating NVIDIA graphics driver

Additional packages via Synaptic Package Manager:

gufw GUI for configuring the firewall
Meld is tool for comparing and merging text files.
Gnome Commander is a good clone of Norton Commander; install package gnome-commander (Gnome Commander uses Meld as default compare tool.)
Open as Administrator in Nautilus
nautilus gksu adds an 'Open as Administrator'-action in the context-sensitive menu. Therefore console is not anymore needed to edit a file as admin.
Package smbfs for SMB mounting (see below)
Packages for OpenOffice (among others)
  • importing Star Office documents / spreadsheets (restart Open Office necessary)
  • database module, needed for e.g. exporting to dbase-files
  • hunspell-de-ch-frami (don't know if necessary...)
For ripping CDs into MP3 with Sound Juicer (defaultly installed) you need following packages
  • lame (multiverse)
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly (universe)
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse (multiverse)

After changes any presets in Sound Juicer you have to restart it.

Alternative program to grip (used on old PC).
Contains e.g. console program play to play wav-files.
Tool for saving and restoring harddisk partitions.
contains different restricted extras, e.g. Windows fonts, thus replacing msttcorefonts, which seems no longer available
Boot-up manager, replacement for System, Administration, Services (which seems to be missing in 10.04)
thunderbird Mozilla Thunderbird
Thunderbird generally pleases me more than the Evolution mail program. Nevertheless it does not open files with wrong MIME-setting. To fix this you can install the add-on OPENATTACHMENTBYEXTENSION from page [1]. See [2] as well. Installation: Do in Thunderbird: 'Tools', 'Add ons', 'Extensions', 'Install...', select *.xpi and install it. After program restart configure it ('Tools', 'Add ons', 'Extensions', 'Preferences'):
*.doc /usr/bin/ooffice
*.DOC /usr/bin/ooffice
Install LookOut in Thunderbird so that you can decode winmail.dat attachements:
Gnome Partition Manager
Simple Backup Manager. See [3] and [4].
Do remember:
  • supports full and incremental backup (do fullback after ..days)
  • different backup configurations possible on the command line
  • The program can be started by user (Applications, Accessories, Simple Backup Configuration; no shedule supported) or as Admin (Applications, System Tools, Simple Backup Configuration (This is the one currently used)
  • Depending on user started the relevant files differ: ~/.config/sbackup/sbackup.conf vs. /etc/sbackup.conf, ~/.local/share/sbackup/log vs. /var/log/sbackup
Tool for taking photos and capturing movies from plugged in cameras
Tool for creating CD sleeves

See [12].

  • Run in shell: sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update and
sudo apt-get --yes install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu
